Gender Inequality


In the off chance that a woman or man receives a job out of gender, there are many things they can expect to encounter. For example when a male takes a job as a secretary people begin to make assumptions. They first immediately assume the man is homosexual in nature. Why else would a man need to be a secretary? What about meeting the needs of the boss? Can a male do this? Why would he want to? Obviously this is not the case but the gender classification runs very deep. On the opposite side there is a female that goes to work for a trucking company. Now in this instance, immediately men are going to give her a hard time. They wrongly assume a female can’t physically do the job. Because of this a woman has to constantly prove herself and stay tough to hang with the boys. This is very hard on either the male or female working a job “meant” for the opposite sex. Everyone should have equal access and ability to be supported in the profession of their choice. The opportunity does exist but, to grasp an opportunity you must go through the lion’s den. (Henson,2001,pp.202-203) When it comes to our current workforce there lies a comfort level with our current situation. It is more comfortable for a woman to be in a profession that is not totally dominated by males. On the other hand we want to have the opportunity to make it financially equally with the men. If we are willing to expand out of our comfort zones, will the job be there? If the job is there, you have to be better than any other male doing the same job to stay ahead. On the men’s side are we truly capable of performing the work? Better yet this is a man’s job has been heard around the world. Is it better that we continue to get the coffee?
