Contents of a Dead Man's Pocket - Marxist Perspective

Social acceptance is the one dream most of us keep hidden from others, but it is always there to haunt us. Why do we want to be accepted by others, or to rise up above others? Why must we look for ways to boast to others? The answer to both of those questions is hierarchy. We form a hierarchy in every environment so that somebody will tell us what we need to do. In reality, everyone is out to prove something to someone. We all want to portray the perfect American image. Money is everything in this world, and the social classes are bound by money and power. To gain power is to gain confidence for most, and that is what Tom Benecke wanted.
Tom Benecke decided not to go to the movie with his wife to stay home and work. He wanted to be promoted at his job as an employee of wholesale groceries. He had worked on gathering data for a presentation he was going to give his boss. He was in the lower part of the hierarchy when it came to his part in society and work. He hoped that the data he had collected would impress his boss, and possibly allow him to move up in his job ranking. For the most part, Tom Benecke felt that he was a little person, below others on the social chain.
His wife wanted to go see a movie, but he insisted on working. He felt bad for rejecting her offer to just stay home and work, but he still stayed home anyway. He felt that this opportunity could help both of them in the future. He hugged her and gave her a kiss as she walked out, and then he opened the window of the room his desk was located in. The breeze threw the paper into the air and right out the window. He looked outside of his window to see how far it had actually gone.

The paper was stuck to the outside of the wall, out of his reach. He had to try and find a way to get to it.
