Costco Wholesale AS/400 Database

Introduction
The database most commonly used by Costco personnel is the AS/400. It is a sophisticated software used for the success of Costco’s operations management. Any and all inquiries in relation to products, services, and even managerial functions are run through this software.
Background
The most predominate and widely used function of the AS/400 is used to look up member inquiries of particular items. We are able to look up item inquires based on criteria such as brand name and keyword. In this database we can determine specifics such as how many of a particular product are on hand, how many are on order (and expected arrival date), how many come on a pallet, and how many have been recently returned. Costco has a high product turnover rate and so the item inquiry function can become very useful. If a customer wishes to know the status of a particular television that we have displayed but do not have any left in a box, I would first look to see if we have any that can be dropped by the forklift. Using the AS/400 I can easily search this by using the item number. By doing so the computer will tell me exactly how many we started the day out with, how many have been sold (updated every several minutes), how many we have on hand, and how many are on order. If we do not have any on hand I can easily access the quantities on hand at other Costco locations anywhere throughout the United States and give the customer accurate up-to-date information on product availability
