George stood in the door way of his little wood cabin, just breathing. He was tired, and it was late. The moon was shining brightly. It was autumn and the temperature had just started to cool down. Taking off his boots he went inside. Moving ever so quietly so as not to wake his stepdaughter Cecilia, he crept to the sink to wash his face of the dirt and grime. The cabin was a one room place which he kept up well, despite his measly income. Finally he finished washing and knelt down to the floor to pull his bed role out.
Cecilia groaned and rolled over. George looked up at her from where he was squatting on the floor, and caught her dreamy eyes. She smiled in her special way that made George feel like a father, and he smiled affectionately back.
“Sorry I woke you sweetie,” he crooned with his low baritone voice.
“Its okay I wasn’t really sleeping,” with another smile that showed the dimples on her small face.
“Alright then go to sleep Cecilia…. I love you.”
She yawned and whispered, “Love you too daddy”. Then closed her eyes and started to breath steadily.
George loved his stepdaughter. The first time he had met her she had stolen his heart. Her mother had done the same the first time he met her. George frowned when he thought of how after only three years together Cecilia’s mother had died from some unknown disease. The doctors could not tell what was the matter with her. One day she just started getting weaker and weaker. Finally she could not sit up anymore. Four weeks after it started, Jennifer passed away in her sleep, leaving Cecilia in the care of her stepfather George Waker.
George looked for the woman who would love him as much as he would love her. He sought an undying love to last him forever and a day. He never got married because the women whom he met always seemed to be not quite right for him. He always found something that made him feel, this was not the...
