Dance Analysis
I love to watch dance, all types. From ballet to pop, dance is a energetic art. In the movie Save the Last Dance, there is a ballet dancer who learns the art of hip hop dance. Ballet is a much disciplined art. It requires a lot of conditioning, including strength, endurance, and flexibility. Ballet focuses on athletic graceful movements (eHow, 2013). The gracefulness is clearly see in the principle actress of Save the Last dance. At the same time, she initially struggled with learning hip hop dance. Since she spent most of her life learning, practicing and performing ballet, it was a little difficult to transition. But eventually she did well.
In Shall We Dance, Richard Gere plays an over worked lawyer who feels that there is something missing in his life. One day he was heading home and he saw a beautiful dance instructor, and decides to take dance lessons. Unlike ballet, ballroom dancing requires a partner. It is performed to modern music such as jazz, swing and Latin music (eHow, 2013). Ballet on the other hand is mostly performed to classical music.
Ballet is considered for the serious minded dancer. It is a classical expression of movement. Ballet dates back to the 17th Century and is the foundation of all dances (International Dance Teachers Association, 2009). Ballet is not a dance of recreation, however ballroom dance it. Ballroom dancing allows for the dancer to add their own style. It is a dance that is done socially, competitively, and in exhibitions. I believe that in the movie is was done as an socially and as an exhibition.
Personally, I enjoy dancing. I have a little experience in modern and hip hop dance. One day I’d like to try ballroom dancing or even swing dancing. I noticed over the years, that I enjoy exercise much better when it is in the form of dancing rather than actually gym type workouts.
