I worked for a company in Owosso Michigan called Invisalink Wireless. This company dealt with providing wireless Internet service to its customers. This may seem like an easy job, where all you do is put something up and connect it wireless to your customers. While wireless Internet may have its advantages and disadvantages over cabled Internet, it is still not an easy task to accomplish. Considering the area where wireless Internet is mainly utilized you have a lot of objectives in your way to get the Internet from your source at your main office out into the surrounding areas. While there are many aspects to wireless Internet I’ll focus on the part of database administration for the company within this paper.
One major goal of any company is to provide stellar customer service and keep good documentation on your product or service. Well it just so happens we had a program that dealt with both the customer service aspect and kept documentation about our product and service. The program we used was Prizm by Motorola. What Prizm does is utilize the MySQL database software to keep track of customer information such as address, phone number, IP Address, billing information and other vital information.
Another main aspect of Prizm that we enjoyed the most about it was its ability to keep stats and monitoring of our Motorola Canopy equipment out in the field. You would input data about your equipment on your towers and customer locations and it would automatically enter this information into your database for you. Once in the database it would then access that information to help monitor your system. This allowed you to see in real time if your tower and/or customers were up and running properly. What this helped you do was keep track of vital information such as downtime or throughput on your network.
