Information management technologies recently affect the leadership and decision making methods required in different industries. In this case study, David was overwhelmed with the volume of research he has to perform for his firm within quite limited timeframe, thus he sought to create a team of analysts which could assist him to categorize his research to each industry and facilitate the portfolio management process in the firm.
David failed to build the team on his first attempt as a result of several reasons. Although David has not been providing adequate well-developed team management expertise, his team had the potential to become an effective and cooperative team to generate higher level of performance only if he can try to be more human resource type leader rather than being only structural leader. He can meet with his team on the regular basis to provide guidance, directions and also get their buy in to his objectives and goals.
There were some mistakes which David could have avoided in his interactions with people. The first one was that he did not involve Stephanie in the hiring process of Brian. This initiates a hidden growing conflict between Brian and Stephanie which led to being unproductive. Therefore, much time and effort was wasted on trying to resolve the issues instead of focusing on the investments analysis. Furthermore, he failed to resolve the problem even after the fact since he clearly stated that he did not proactively try to resolve the conflicts which resulted to the conflict dragged out all the way till Brian left the firm. As David indicated, He only “hypothesized” about knowing the problem but the reality was David and Stephanie were not compatible to work together even though the crossovers were so limited. This became worst when Stephanie asked for Edward’s intervene and he got David to sit with her to talk about her issues.
