De-Globalization in Society

Sara Hoffman De-globalization Paper September 24, 2008 De-globalization in Society As the world tries so hard to help poverty stricken countries, there are a lot of strategies to help these people out. My choice to help the countries would be the method that Jeffery D. Sachs has suggested in his article “The End of Poverty.” In this article he states how easy it would be for other countries to help out the countries that are not so lucky to have a lot of money. His argument states that it is totally possible to get poverty out of countries. All we would need is a tiny amount of money from others incomes of countries that are higher up on the economic ladder (Sachs 2005, 475). There is also evidence that this strategy would work. If every person gave seventy dollars a year to these poor countries for several years, by 2025 these poor countries would have a better economy and would not have to deal with the hardships that they once had (Sachs 2005, 476). Although I believe this is a good method, there are also some other alternatives to helping out the poor countries. In the article by David Dollar and Aart Kraay, they discuss a method of developmental assistance and policy advice. They will help the other countries in areas such as “…free trade and capital mobility which in return will promote equality and reduced poverty for countries integrated into the world economy” (Dollar and Kraay 2002, 124). Although this is another method, there is some argument against it that it will just make more inequality among the countries. Even though the Dollar and Kraay argument may be flawed, there is also another method that some may want to consider. Walden Bello has come up with a strategy to help the poor countries. “For starters, he suggests, the IMF, WB, and WTO should be “decommissioned,” that is, eliminated, because they are so deeply flawed. After this process of deconstruction has been completed, globalization should be reconstructed by building democratic...
