Adam Birli One theme from chapter 5 could be hardship. It is of no surprise that slaves were treated badly, but to be tortured is just wrong. The slaves would be beaten for everything they did wrongly, such as spilling water, breaking something, or not doing the job good enough. The beatings would not just be whippings, but some people actually cut off the limbs of their slaves and cut pieces of skin out of them to make sure that they would never run away or mess up and to strike fear into the other slaves so that they would never even think of running away or doing something wrong. The masters also would treat the slaves like animals by branding them with the master’s initials, and putting mussels on them, and locking them up in a box. One more theme is injustice. Not only were these people taken from their homes and family and friends, they were forced to work. Now, they actually got money for their work but usually their masters wouldn’t pay them, or it would get stolen, and if they asked about their pay, they would be beaten. Then if a slave went out to sell stuff for his master the people buying the products wouldn’t pay either and just walk away with the goods, this would also result in a beating.the masters also would treat the slaves like animals by branding them with the master’s initials, and putting mussels on them, and locking them up in a box.
