Coburn 30 Homelands Terrace Hamden, CT 06517 The tragic events that led up to the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City has left a huge impact on us as American citizens. There are many theories that surround why this tragedy occurred that day. Some people say that the leading cause was based on the religious belief of a certain group of men. Even though religion was one of the factors, it was not the leading cause of this tragedy. To fully understand why it happened one must view the players that were involved. Let us take a look back to the Presidential years of the first Bush administration. During his term in office throughout the years he formed several relationships with a lot of powerful world leaders. In Iraq it was Saddam Hussein, in Panama it was Manuel Noriega just to name a few. I name these two because in the grand scheme of things they ended up being George Bush’s enemies. Noriega ended up in prison for life, while Hussein payed with his life. In the American government’s quest to be the only world power to exist, a plan had to be formulated. The Soviet Union was just as strong and powerful as we were. It was our only threat as it would relate to worldwide security. In the late nineteen eighties, the American government recruited and trained a group called Al Qaeda. They function as a fundamentalist group of terrorist that happened to be Muslims. Islam was their choice of religion. Their mission was to help America dismantle the Soviet Union. The American government made promises to the group leader Osama bin Laden after the mission was completed. They promised to aid the group with financial rewards to fund their cause. The group was warring in its native land for control of the government. Al Qaeda was successful in its mission with the United States to break up the Soviet Union.
