Dietary Supplements




Dietary supplements are substances added to complete a diet or make up for a dietary deficiency; it includes such things as vitamins, minerals, herbals, amino acids, and enzymes. Dietary supplements are also marketed in different forms some being tablets, capsules, soft gels, and gel caps. Even though some dietary supplements are well understood there are others that need for research done as they can be dangerous for a person to intake. Some supplements may help the assurance that you get an adequate dietary intake of essential nutrients even when you do not have to have a full healthy diet. It is however important that people keep in mind supplements should not replace the variety of foods that are important to a healthy diet, meaning they still need to have a healthy diet on the side. Dietary supplements should not be related as drugs as they do not prevent diseases like medicine does they only keep your body healthy. Many supplements contain active ingredients that have strong biological effects in the body. This could make them unsafe in some situations and hurt or complicate a person’s health. There are some things that can lead to harmful or life threatening situations they are as follows, taking a dietary supplement while on medication whether it be prescribed or over the counter, substituting a dietary supplement for a prescription, and taking too much of particular supplements such as vitamin A, vitamin D, or Iron. The government has some regulations for dietary supplements however I do not think they are strict enough. The government requires that any company wanting to use their name on a particular supplement must submit to the FDA all serious adverse event reports associated with the use of their dietary supplement in the United States.
