Stark Differences of Night of the Living Dead 1968 & 1990
A contrasting issue of the original and remake of the Night of the Living Dead is the music. While the music does not contribute to a majority of distractions felt by the audience, the music in the original still did not contribute well to the film. In the original version, the music played loudly throughout the cemetery scene and it did not seem to fit the actual action of the scene. Not only was the music not fit for the horror of the film, it did not play in tune with the action. During calm times throughout the movie the music played at a loud monotone level, which it did not soften during calm times or increase during times which called for maximum impact. The music could not have affected the audience being that it could be considered as a distraction throughout the movie instead of a terrifying effect. Contrastingly, the music in the remake of the film played on beat with the action of the movie. As the music softened or increased, it created suspense within the audience. Overall, the music chosen for the remake was better fit for the film being that the music actually fit the scenes. While music may not seem like an important factor of films, the music contributes to the scariness or lack thereof in horror films. If an audience is watching a film in which the music does not fit the action and horror would be hard to follow. However, if an audience is watching a film in which the music is both scary and fits the scene, the music adds impact to the film, especially the most horrific of scenes. As stated before, the remake demonstrates well chosen music for Night of the Living Dead. While music is considered an important essential for a horror film, so is dialog. In the original, the dialog between characters could not be considered natural dialog being that it did not sound like the regular conversation of everyday people or even normal, everyday siblings.
