There are many people who do not know what they are getting when they buy a movie or a new CD. DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection, which is the background software loaded on all new media purchased, it is there to keep people from unlawfully making copies. You would really have to ask yourself if that new movie you just purchased is yours to do with as you please. Do the large record and movie companies have a legitimate reason to place this type of protection on merchandise they produce? Making backup copies of movies and CDs you purchase should not be illegal if it is being done for personal use. The Digital Rights Management protection schemes placed on new merchandise is not right.
There are not many people who are aware of the fact that you cannot share copies of movies or CDs you purchase, except for the fact that when you try, your computer will not let you. This is because there is copy protection software imbedded in every new CD and movie you purchase. So, do you really own this new CD or movie you just purchased or are you just renting it for a very long time? You are not allowed to makeup a backup copy of that kid movie you just purchased, even though you know your kids will eventually scratch them up and eventually render them useless. You cannot make a second copy of that new CD to carry along in your car, or share a copy with your best friend or one of your siblings.
There are many reasons why large movie and record companies place these restrictions on the media they sell, some are legitimate, but at the inconvenience of the average user. These protections are mostly targeted towards the media pirate, the person who mass produces copies and sells them on the street at a fraction of what an original would cost. There are also the P2P, Person to Person, file sharers who feel it is their right to share their music with all of their friends, all four million of them, because they bought it.
