Ross and Schneider (1992) have identified a number of clear benefits of having a diverse workforce; three reasons can be summarised as:
• The diverse workforce produces a wider range of ideas and can think from a broader range of perspectives than a workforce that is not diverse.
• If employees are treated fairly they will be more motivated and committed to the organisation. This is likely to lead to an increase in productivity, and a deeper commitment to the mission and goals of the organisation
• If all people are treated equally then people will be recruited and promoted on the basis of their skills and abilities. This will mean that it is more likely that the most capable people will achieve important positions in the organisation
