Hispanic American Diversity 1. Hispanic American Diversity Due: December 14, 2008 By: Melissa Smith Hispanic American Diversity 2. When identifying the linguistic, political, social, economic, religions, and familial conventions of four Hispanic groups living in the United States; I chose these four groups; Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Central Americans. Each group has characteristics that make them a Hispanic group. Each group speaks a Spanish language and has important qualities of their culture like love for their families and religion. are bilingual, and 51 percent are Spanish dominant (Chapter Nine.) Mexican Americans have been legally but not socially classified as “whites”. At times and places where Mexican Americans were allotted white status; they were permitted to intermarry with what today are termed as “non-Hispanic whites”. Mexican American could vote and hold elected office in places such as Texas, especially in San Antonio. However some places placed English literacy requirements preventing some Mexican Americans from voting. The economic status of Mexican Americans has been a big issue. As of lately, the police are raiding business like construction sites making sure that Mexican American employees are legal citizens. The demand for cheap labor has been provided by Mexican Americans forcing Mexican Americans that are not legal residents into a don’t ask, don’t tell policy between them and the employers. On May 05, 2006, Hispanic American Diversity 3. hundred of illegal immigrants, Mexican Americans and other nationalities walked out of their jobs across the country in protest to immigration laws. There are many strong family ties in the Mexican American families. The father is the leader of the family, while the mother runs the household, shops, and prepares the food (Wikipedia.)
