In human nature, there are two opposing sides, good and evil. These polar opposites are everywhere. They are in superhero comics, books, history, news, and your life. People come across these two terms all the time, but their definitions are highly subjective. Some would say good is an act that they agree with, and evil is an act that they disagree with. However, not everyone has the same belief system. That makes it possible for differing opinions on the exact same action. Good can be thought of as evil, and evil can be thought of as good, because these terms are a matter of perspective. They are not definite in any given situation. In the novel, Lord of the Flies, the author, William Golding displays these two sides through two characters in the story. Ralph is the character facilitating order on the island, and Jack is the character who attempts to bring about chaos. The acts of both characters can be thought of as both good and evil, depending on who is reading the story.

When thinking about Ralph from Lord of the Flies, certain things come to mind. He was the first character Golding introduced in the novel, emphasizing his importance, and he was elected chief of all the boys at the beginning of the story. He is “the fair boy,” which indicates that he appears as a flawless individual (6). He is the representation of order and civilization throughout the story. He is concerned with good ways to survive, such as building huts, collecting food, and thinking of plans to get rescued. It was his idea to create the fire in order to make a smoke signal, so that their chances of being rescued were higher. He keeps the fire going, and in the end that is how they are saved. He is the type of person who has a very responsible nature, is capable of being in charge when necessary, and makes decisions that would benefit the entire group of children.
