Vegetarianism is not my way of life by any means. I love a good burger, steak and the occasional ham once in a while. Enjoying a good piece of meat does not mean a person agrees with the abuse of animals either. Animal abuse should not be tolerated because this type of behavior could lead to a destructive habit and the possibility of abusing a person. Even though animals are bred mostly for consumption, they should still be treated with some respect and who knows a better quality of food may be produced by and un-abused animal.
Animal abuse could lead to a destructive habit and the possibility of abusing a person. Animals are just that, animals. There is no way this pattern of behavior exists. They are just here as a source of food. Animals have no feelings because if they did they would tell us. “Morality is an artifact of human culture devised to help humans negotiate human social relations.” Pollan Pg 325. Every person has feelings and feels remorse from time to time depending on situations. By abusing animals, we dull our sense of feelings. Like any other habit the more we do it the more it comes natural. If you were to take and have someone abuse an animal a certain way, base on what the animal did, long enough. That person would have no feelings towards the animal base on the actions of the animal. Now if a person did the same thing as the animal did, then the person abusing the animal would not think twice about abusing the person because of the conditioning the abuser has gone through. Think of Pavlov’s dog. Not only was the dog reacting to the bell a certain way but the person ringing the bell is being conditioned to treat the animal this way.
Treating animals with some respect may provide a better quality of food. Animals are going to taste the same regardless of how they are treated. It is just meat and as long as it is not beat to mush then a little abuse is...
