Dorian Grey

When you’re in a relationship, it seems to feel like there’s always something wrong. But what might be wrong could be as simple as just being too insecure. Very frequently problems arise between couples or even friendships over what Yann Dall’Aglio calls “Seduction Capital”. Seduction Capital is the act of collecting symbols from people to feel desirable. In other terms, it is trying to improve you through self-image or material items to increase the desire from another person or persons (Dall’Aglio).
One of the biggest epidemics in self-improvement with people nowadays is the purchasing of material items so they can be looked at with a certain prestige. According to Brian Eisenberg an online marketing pioneer, four out of the top twenty reasons people buy things are connected to this exact problem. Number 5 on the list for why people buy things is prestige or aspirational purchase which is the act of buying something to boost your self-esteem. Commonly known as materialism, this buyer values the material item therefore he has more value having it. Along with this, consumers buy things for name recognition. Say you’re going out for a date with a lady you want to like you. You are going to buy the name brand expensive clothes to wear not to show that you’re rich but to show her that this date with her meant enough to you to buy an expensive outfit to wear and she knows that through the brand name. Another similar buying trend in modern society is fad or innovation purchases (Eisenberg, 2011). The most important thing to fashion today in this world is to stay current. If there is a new fad and you are not a part of it, you will not be looked at as desirable. This leads a lot of people to spending their money on things to not be the odd man out.
Everyone wants to be the perfect person or the most desirable person they can be. That’s why we all strive to improve ourselves with anything possible. It isn’t a problem to try to improve yourself, but you should do it...
