Drinking Age There is one ailment that continues to grow around our country and has yet to see any cures, drinking. Drinking has been done all throughout our nation’shistory, but has never seen the heights that it has reached today. The United Statescurrently has the highest drinking age throughout the world, and has since 1984 when congress passed the Minimum Drinking Act Age. The California Drinking Age should be lowered from 21 to 18 years of age because it will create equal rights, diminish the amount of alcohol related deaths and allow for easier supervision in order to teach knowledge of proper use. Lowering the drinking age to 18 will establish equal rights for all adults, who can currently doanything, but drink. McCardell, founder of the Choose Responsibly organization signifies the fact that, “18 year-olds can enlist and fight in Iraq…” (McCardell). This is obsaureed, 18 to 20 year-olds can serve in Iraq, but can’t have a drink. They can die for their nation, America, but can’t enjoy a simple glass of wine at dinner. People learn from experience and young adultsare not getting the chance to experience drinking. Not only does it create inequality, but it builds a cloud of questions. 18 to 20 year-olds can do so much more than just join the military;they carry so many other responsibilities. Writers Gordon and Holl just add to the list, “… 18 year-olds can vote, serve on juries, marry…” (Gordon and Holl). 18 year-olds have so many responsibilities. They can decide the fate of others, but can’t go into a restaurant and sit down at a bar. This shows the government does not trust the young adults of our nation with their own decisions. The drinking age is the lone exception to the rights that 18 to 20 year-olds do not have and lowering the current legal age will make their rightsequal.
