Now and Then: Life in the 90’s compared to Now
Children growing up during the 1990’s have a very different life style compared to the children growing up today. Life during the 90’s appeared to be much simpler compared to now. There wasn’t all the technology then that we live off of today. There was also a sense of responsibility of all the mothers for all of the neighborhood children. Kids today will look at something that the 90’s kids played with and think that it is very old fashioned. My kids think that I am ancient, even though I am only 31. During my childhood in the 90’s, children were allowed to play outside until the street lights came on. There were not cell phones available, so the children were always within yelling distance of home. And by golly, if you didn’t come home when your mother yelled, you got in trouble!
During the 1990’s there were very little dangers that lurked around the corner. There was very little fear of child abduction. There were child abductions, but very few. There were little limitations upon bicycle safety. Children did not have to wear their helmets, they could ride in the street. All cars knew to watch for children playing while they were driving through the streets. Children then did all of this without parental supervision. Parents then also did not have special locks on doors, cabinets, or have those special bumper pads on the end of coffee tables. There were also no childproof locks on medications. Today everything has to be childproof. There are special locks and mechanisms for everything.
In today’s world everything has an obesity warning, especially for children. It all boils down to a lack of children exercising. Today’s children are so stuck on technology. There is always a tablet, cell phone, video game, or the TV on. They eat sweets, cakes, candies or whatever they want to. Kids then ate whatever they wanted, but they were always outside playing. They would burn the calories of that food that they ate....
