Edgar Allan Poe was a poet, a writer, an artist, a thinker, and a dreamer. We all know of Edgar Allan Poe, but do we really know about him? There are many interesting facts about Edgar Allan Poe that most people would never even think of. That is what my essay is about.

Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19th, 1809 in Boston. His mother, who was an actress, Elizabeth Arnold Poe died almost three years after Edgar Allan Poe was born. He was taken into care by John Allan. Later on in his life, Edgar Allan Poe went to the University of Virginia and became an active member of the Jefferson Literary Society. After a while he went into debt because his “father” wasn’t giving him enough money. John Allan then disowned Edgar. Edgar Allan Poe then went to Boston

While in Boston Edgar Allan Poe enlisted in the United States Army under the name Edgar A. Perry. After two years of service he was discharged with the help of Mr. Allan. In 1829 Edgar Allan Poe had already written two books.

In May of 1836 Edgar Allan Poe married his cousin Virginia Clemm. But 10 years later on January 39th, 1847 Virginia died of illness. Edgar Allan Poe became very sad. Later in his life though Edgar Allan Poe was interested in several women.

There are many tales about how Edgar Allan Poe died. But for the most part, no one really knows for sure how he died. He was found in an unconscious state and was taken to a hospital where he later died on Sunday, October 7th, 1849.
He wrote a lot of dark and depressing works. The causes of some of these works would be his mother dying when he was very young, and maybe never knowing his father. Another reason could be his alcoholism and his drug addiction. Edgar Allan Poe also did opium.

Most people think Edgar Allan Poe was crazy. Maybe he was. But that’s what made him the Edgar Allan Poe we know of today. His stories and poems may not rhyme or be the best, but they tell stories that some other poets can’t...
