adfasfaWilliam Sidney Porter was a man that since childhood had a love for books. He was a married and had one daughter. His only real schooling was received at his aunt’s private school and attended some high school but it is said that as for the rest of his education he read a lot and was educated in the school of life. Porter had several different jobs after his move to Austin from North Carolina. One of those jobs was working as a teller in the First National Bank where he was accused of embezzling money. After the accusation he fled the country with the plan that his wife and daughter would later meet him there.
However, that never happened because his wife got sick and had to return to care for his wife. When Porter came back he reported to the authorities and was later found guilty of the charges. Porter sentenced to five years in prison in Ohio. There was when he decided that he would be better known as O Henry. He made his choice because he wanted to protect his true identity.
After being released from prison O Henry moved to New York City where for the next ten years he gained worldwide fame as a short story writer. He also married his child sweetheart but the marriage only lasted one year. He short stories are primarily written from his first hard personal experience. O Henry then an alcoholic died of a young age of liver disease and was also penniless.
One of O Henry’s short stories was called “Buried Treasures”. In this story he describes a man who has been a fool in every way possible except for one. He talks about a man who played his money away and did illegal business and soon after that he had no money. He one day came to realize that he had become this wild man with an unkept beard and ragged hair. The one time that he was not a fool was with the woman that he always remembered since he first day he saw her. He truly wanted her to be his wife.
