Effective Leadership and Gender Differences in Communication
Have you ever been under someone and you wondered how they became a leader. I have been under people that had no clue on how to be an effective leader and do not think they really cared. I do think that male and female have differences in communication. They have different types of communication in organizations and relationships.
Effective leadership is very important in any organization or group. “A leader is a person who can influence others to be more effective in working to achieve their mutual goals and maintain effective working relationships among members. Leadership is the process through which leaders exert such influence.” (Joining Together, p. 168)
When you work for an organization you want to be under great leadership. When I first started at MetLife I had horrible leadership. My manager did not know what she was doing and got angry when you were not doing what you are supposed to do. How can you do your job effectively without effective leadership? I think it is impossible. When our team had questions about an account we had to go to senior case managers to get the answer because my manager would not know the answer. Since our team did not have effective leadership it really brought down morale.
Being a leader you have to lead by example. “Leaders practice what they preach. They walk their talk.” (Joining Together, p. 201) My manager had informed us that we were going to a new computer system. All the teams in the office had to go through training for the new system. The new system was going to help us be more productive and efficient. I any new system there bugs that need to be adjusted. My manager wanted me to speak with IT about the problems we were seeing. When IT came to my desk they stated that they wanted me to show them the issues on my manager’s computer. IT went into my manager’s system and found out that she had not downloaded the new system...
