The Effects of Childhood Abuse on Adult relationships
Childhood abuse is a major problem that affects the lives millions of people. There are three different types of child abuse physical, emotional, and sexual. The effects of childhood abuse can have profound and lasting negative implications for the victim’s quality of life. Childhood abuse has the potential to damage a child physically, emotionally, and behaviorally for the rest of his or her childhood, and the effects have been connected to lasting into adulthood. Short term effects of child abuse include poor academic performance, emotional and behavioral problems, and difficulty socializing. Behaviors left untreated in childhood have to potential to still be present in the victim’s adulthood. Long term effects of childhood abuse can cause behavioral, emotional, and social problems in adulthood that can have a profound negative effect on an individual’s quality of life. An adult who experienced abuse as a child has a greater likelihood of becoming violent, suicidal, and abusive to their children in comparison with an adult never experienced abuse. The emotional and behavioral problems victims experience in adulthood can cause impaired social skills can lead to negative effects on the quality intimate relationships. Implications of childhood abuse negatively impact the victim’s adulthood relationships as a result of the problems associated with abuse. Many studies have been conducted that show a correlation between childhood abuse and the poor quality of relationships in adulthood.
A study conducted at the University of Manibota examined the correlation between childhood sexual abuse and adult social behavior.
