A hero is a man with courage or ability, who is admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. A hero is someone you count on to come get you out of those sticky situations. I know that when I think of a hero I think of a strong handsome man. There are hero’s in everyday stories such as, Batman, Superman, Spiderman, Odysseus and, so many more. I’m sure you have heard of Odysseus. Odysseus is the main character from The Odyssey. The Odyssey was written by Homer. Homer also wrote the Illiad if you are familiar with that epic poem. The Odyssey is about Odysseuss’long journey back to his home land in Ithaca.
Oydsseus showed his heroic side when he went to the island of Cyclopes. Odysseus and his men went into the cave to get cheese and goats. Suddenly the Cyclops, Polyphemus, came home that afternoon and stuck a big rock in front of the door so no one could get out. Polyphemus started to eat a few men and than took a nap. Odysseus and his men made an arrow out of a tree branch. While the cyclops was sleeping they poked his eye out. Odyesseus had just blinded Polyphemus. The cyclops then asked what Odyessuess’ name was and Odyessues replied with “My name is Nohbdy”. This was smart and heroic because now that Cyclopes thinks his name is Nohbdy he can’t blame Odyessus. This also shows that he thinks ahead. Later Odyessues askes Polphyemus who blinded him and he replied with Nohbdy blinded me.
Odysseus has a lot of pride himself. When Circe turned his crew into animals, he climbed straight up a mountain, risking his life just to save his crew. He will do anything to get back to his home town of Ithaca and see his wife and so, no matter how crazy it is. He even goes into the underworld to speak to the prophet about how to get back to Ithaca. Being brave and courageous is all about being willing and able to go to the extremes to help or save people.
