Emotionally Focused Couples Paper
Marriage is something most people long for because it is meant to last a lifetime with that special someone. In most traditional wedding ceremonies couples vow to love each other through sickness and health until separated by death. Often time, marriages are not the beds of roses that most couples expect. There are times when childhood experiences, past relationships, and life traumas lead couples to experience emotional detachment causing unresolved issues to surface within the marriage. This paper is based on a video Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (2009) produced and presented by Susan Johnson. In this video, Susan helps a married couple referred by Therapist Keith Edwards. Patty and Josh agree to discuss their martial issues using EFT. Susan Johnson is a therapist who provides couples with emotionally focused therapy known as (EFT). Susan shows the importance of verbal and nonverbal, responses, asking open and closed-ended questions, using techniques to paraphrase and summarize information-giving responses and encouraging the client to self-disclose. This paper will identify the exploration, clarification, and action stage of the interview. Susan also provides an example of reflective feelings.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
“Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is an evidenced-based therapy model. EFT is viewed as an empirical approach to couple therapy and it has lasting treatment effects” (Greenman & Johnson, 2013). EFT is a structured psychotherapy that helps individuals, couples, and families. It focuses on the inner emotional state that couples are experiencing. This therapy can help couples find their way to restoring their marriage by resolving problems they have endured during the marriage.
