ETHICS AND MORALITY
Socrates says:
1. ethics concern “no small matter, but how we ought to live.”
2. In order to be truly happy, happiness and moral virtue might just be inseparable.
3. “The unexamined life is not worth living”
4. ethical conflict is just part of human condition
5. and Plato dreamt of Utopia, where people would live in perfect harmony
6. It’s not enough for you to do the right thing. We have to examine the meaning of our behaviour and reasons for it
Ethics
- an everyday aspect of life, and in order to live the ethical life, we have certain commitments and beliefs on which we act
- Ethical Commitment means that your environment is stocked with materials that you find ethically acceptable for use
- involves asking questions about the good life, requires examining right and wrong conduct, good and bad values
- Ethical norms are not just rules we choose to follow, but are an important part of our identity: when we do a no-no, we experience the pain of others’ wrath, and also our own wrath

Ethical Dilemma
- arises whenever a choice has to be made in which something good has to be given up or something bad has to be suffered no matter what is chosen
- forces us to choose in a way that involves breaking some ethical norm or contradicting some cherished moral value
- sometimes, doing good for people requires that we do interfere with their lives
- caused by scarcity of resources: good things normally come with a price, we put up with a lot of painful things in order to survive

Ethical conflicts
- come from human conflict and disagreement
- occurs when we’re confronted by challenges
- caused by society (e.g. women’s duty: full time breadwinners and moms… which is impossible  conflict arises)
Value
- something that 1. has worth for some people and 2. points out a good that we should go after either 3. because it’s valuable in itself or 4. because it is a way to reach some other value or good
