Compare/Contrast Essay
In my life time I have held a wide range of jobs, in which I gained many life lessons and a lot of experience through. In this essay I will compare and contrast the two learning experiences of working at a superior, state job and working at a mediocre job, where a person can be easily replaced. The two jobs, I gained my experiences from; are at my current, state job at Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency and a previous job I held at United Parcel Service. In the following paragraphs I will be comparing and contrasting the details on each job.
As I reflect on my work experience, I noticed that my current employer and my previous employer have a few similarities. The main similarity I noticed is that both of these jobs are entry-level, which means that these jobs are normally designed or designated for recent graduates, and do not require prior experience in the field or profession. Also each job encourages on joining a union workforce which is beneficial because, unions have made life better for all working Americans by passing laws ending child labor, establishing the eight-hour work day, protecting workers’ safety and health and helping create Social Security, unemployment insurance and the minimum wage, for example. A final similarity in each job is the encouragement on furthering your education, they do so by offering reimbursement programs and in some cases even offer to pay for your entire schooling, as long as you can maintain a passing grade.
Although they have a few similarities, UPS and PHEAA, differ immensely. The biggest contrasting feature I realized was the different work environments, which I found obvious. PHEAA’s work environment is in an office, over-looking downtown, Harrisburg. To go in to greater detail it’s clean, professional, quiet, and a state job.
