Execution should be televised
The article “Execution should be televised” was written by Mr. Shemtob who is an assistant professor of criminal justice at Central Connecticut State University. This essay is about the case of Andrew Grant DeYoung who is condemned inmate. It was the third execution in Georgia on 2011. One of defense lawyers of DeYoung was asking to record the execution. So he could use this like the evidence for unnecessary suffering which DeYoung had to experience by lethal injection. And one discussion was occurred. This videotape was not released to the public. Should it have been? Looking the death penalty in the eye can help citizens decide whether they support capital punishment.
To engage the readers emotionally, Mr Shemtob uses three main modes throughout the essay. Exemplification is one of this. He gives 2 examples that help the readers understand that idea about public execution is not really crazy. The first one is about president Obama when he was Illinois senator, he successfully pressed for the videotaping of homicide interrogation and confession. And second one is Roy Blankenship’s case. He was also executed as the same method that DeYoung was. All exemplifications support on the writer’s opinion. They make the readers feel assured and believe that execution should be public. Because they think that there were some similar cases before and they are clearly and also did by the current president. It is the strategies of Shemtob to appeal audience’s emotion.
The second effective mode is juxtaposition. Shemtob shows how the current execution was conducted right now. He tries to put the two people’s views about this event by side. The first are the press and few witnesses who could see directly in the penalty room and the second are the rest people know about it by the morning paper vaguely.
