Executive Summary: Benchmark Assessment
Childhood obesity is one of the world’s most challenging health threats. One in three children and teenagers are thought to be obese or overweight and an increasing number are being treated for abnormal cholesterol and hypertension, risks for heart disease (Fortunato, 2012) Studies have similarly associated obesity or overweight youths to a sharp rise in the incidences of type 2 diabetes which can lead to blindness, heart and kidney disease and even amputations. Additionally, being overweight is related to increased occurrences of asthma and sleep apnea which can increase the risk for cardiovascular risks (Kiser Permanente, 2006). This presentation’s goal is to introduction the CORE (Childhood Obesity Reduction Endeavor) campaign to combat childhood obesity for minority and low-income families in Beaufort County South Carolina.
Project purpose
The purpose of this project is to reduce the incidence of overweight and obese children through education. Therefore, CORE will become a resource for minority and low-income families to assist with battling childhood obesity. The focus will be on healthy eating habits, accessing healthier foods and maintaining or starting an active lifestyle to prevent and reverse childhood obesity and the subsequent health risks. The hope is that we can encourage local farmer’s markets to sell fresh produce at rates that low-income families can afford, offering better choices in vending machine in schools and better choices in school cafeterias. In addition, providing community activity areas such as playgrounds, parks and community centers that encourage activities. The campaign is looking to include local farmers, healthcare industry leaders, community investors and public policy makers because together we can make a difference....
