In the past a simple two-stroke mechanical pump consisted of a receiving hopper, an inlet and an outlet valve, a piston and a cylinder. The pump was powered by a diesel engine. The pumping action starts with the suction stroke drawing concrete into the cylinder as the piston moves backwards. During this operation the outlet value is closed. On the forward stroke, the inlet valve closes and the outlet valve opens to allow concrete to be pushed into the delivery pipe. Pumps consist basically of pressure vessels and equipment for supplying compressed air. Concrete is delivered in to the pressure vessel and the vessel sealed tightly. Compressed air is then supplied to the top of the vessel which pushes the concrete out through a pipe connected at the bottom. The higher the slump (usually 100 to 150 slump or S2 to S3) the easier it is for the pump to pump it.
