External Influences Paper
Along with the internal influences that affect an organization such the employees, customers and stockholders are the external influences that also have an affect on the Business Continuity Plan (BCP). Such organizations as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, local law enforcement, National Guard and the State Department are just a few outside organizations that can have an impact on the BCP. This paper will attempt to discuss a few of these external organizations and the roles the specific people and titles and how they make an impact on organizing a BCP.
Each organization is created differently and each has specific roles they must meet in certain situations. Some organizations may be involved in almost every possible scenario and some will only have a part to play if there happens to be a specific need. Each need is different from size to situation. Such organizations as FEMA have specific duties in which they will be called upon in the event of a disaster. This agency will respond only when the disaster is so large that local government cannot meet the needs of response. They are more geared toward such disasters as large hurricanes and earthquakes but are also called upon in some instances as major bombings or other large scale accidents. One good example of this is Hurricane Katrina. The local government was all but inundated with a terrible situation that proved to be too much for a wounded organization to try and handle. FEMA was called in to help access the situation and allow the local government a chance to recover. FEMA is a part of the office of Homeland Security, an office established by the Federal Government.
