When you start reading the book the main thing to notice is that it takes place in a world where censorship is present and is imposed on the reading of books. If you were caught reading a book you would at the least be sent to a mental hospital while your books are burned. The individuals who carry out these tasks are known as firemen. The main character ,Guy Montag, is a fireman that’s past relatives have been firemen. Firemen of the day are completely different on how they are now. They don’t prevent fires or stop them since all houses are fire proof now a days. Instead they cause fires by burning the books and the house in which the books are stored in.
A character that impacts Montag in the beginning is a girl by the name of Clarrise that just moved next to him. She is a very different person compared to most other people in that world. She is a young lady who’s free thinking ideals contradict most of that present world’s ideals. This meeting was essential because it made Montag to begin to question his decisions and life. When Montag comes home at night he noticed his wife asleep on her bed with a pack of sleeping pills in one hand. When he calls the doctors over they use a tube to take out Mildred’s (Montag’s wife) blood out and insert new blood. The disregard they used when treating his wife really made him upset and question the days society.
A few days following this, on a mission with his fellow firemen, he stopped at a house of an old woman who had many books. Montag reads a line from one of the books that encourages him to steal it. The women refuses to leave and wishes to stay with her books and lights a match she hid in the room full of kerosene. This instantly kills her. Montag gets disgusted by this and calls in sick for the next day. Montag is visited by Beatty (his sergeant). Beatty tells him why the firemen are so corrupted.
