 Imagine losing your sight as a child. Wouldn’t that make you want to give up? Would you be discouraged in life and never try to do anything for God because you feel you just aren’t worthy? Well, Fanny Crosby didn’t give up. She surpassed all expectations by doing amazing things in her life with commendable causes. Mrs. Crosby was one of the most influential, memorable women in Christian history because she was among the first modern Christian poets, wrote many hymns that are still widely used today, and stayed faithful regardless of the loss of her eyesight.
Francis Jane Alystyne, or as you know her, Fanny Crosby was in the original group of modern, Christian poets that were influential in the world of Christian music.. Her father’s name was Simon Crosby. She was the most famous female writer in Christian history and was quoted saying things like her position is very unique, or “I praise God for the beautiful and wonderful things around me.” She was greatly influenced by Harriett Beecher Stowe, Eliza Spalding, and Phoebe Knapp. Perhaps her most impressive accomplishment however, was achieving the record for most hymns written by any other women. With gender not considered, she is second for the most hymns written; second to Charles Wesley, who wrote almost seven thousand. She was born in Brewster, New York, on March 24, 1820, and went to church regularly wherever she lived at the time. When she got older she married Frances Crosby, giving her the famous last name that she holds now. She died in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on February 12, 1915. Her biography shows that her dying years were peaceful and she was at peace with death.
