Technology has greatly advanced the medical field that medical professionals are now able to detect fetal abnormalities while the fetus is still in utero, technology helps to detect fetal abnormalities of the fetus as early as the fourteenth week of pregnancy. It gives parents the choice of making early decisions, should in case of abnormalities in utero.
The case study talks about the situations a married couple are facing, Marco, Jessica, Maria and Dr Wilson have differing opinions based on varying moral status. Jessica is the mother of the baby, according to Sebo, he believes that anything alive which includes plants, animals and human beings have a moral status. Based on her moral status and values she is likely not going to terminate the pregnancy, all lives are sacred to Jessica. Marco is the husband of Jessica, although the extent of the disability is unknown, but his moral theory is based on the fact that the fetus at this age lacks moral status, based on these three theories; consciousness, sentience and moral agency. While moral agency is human’s ability to judge right or wrong, (GCU, 2016.).Studies claim that fetuses do not have the ability to develop consciousness (cognitive functions) or sentience (feeling pain or pleasure) till about 28 to 30 weeks.(Kleeman,2005;Koch,2009).However Marco said he will support Jessica with whatever decisions she makes. Marco’s moral agency tends to be influenced mostly by their financial burden and capacity. Dr Wilson sees the fetus without moral status as well, according to the earlier discussed three theories, however Dr Wilson thinks the wisest choice is to terminate the pregnancy for medical and scientific reasons. Maria their aunt opposes to any termination, and wants nature and God to take control, she insist that her niece follows through with the pregnancy, she tends...
