Feudalism was a social system of privileges based on the patterns of land ownership. From the 11th to 13th century the system of feudalism slowly established. Feudalism came about for the most part during the reign of King William in England. King William, better known as William the Conqueror, couldn’t keep the people from rebelling and he couldn’t take care of all of the land so in order to solve these problems he came up with the Feudal System. With the Feudal System he would give out certain sections of his land known as “fiefs” to his most important nobles, barons, and bishops, in exchange for their military services and loyalty. Also under this system the peasants or “serfs” were the lowest class so instead of getting for being loyal they were forced to work the land and whoever the lord of that land was would offer them protection. In the Feudal System every person other than the King had a ruling group above them which they owed their loyalty to. For example if you were a serf you had to work for the lords or the knights because they were a higher class than you. The Feudal System pyramid was as following from the highest group to the lowest group. The King was obviously the top of the pyramid because he created the system in the first place. Next came the Nobles and the Barons who were the kings right hand men and they got land directly from the king. Below them were the Bishops. The Bishops had as much power as the Nobles and Barons except they were in charge of the churches and monasteries. Next were the Lords or Knights. These knights get their land from the Nobles who they were bound by oath to serve. On the bottom of the Feudal pyramid were the peasants or the serfs. These peasants were the workers who farmed land to provide everyone with food and they were occasionally given a piece of land in return for labor on the Lords land.
