Ilkley Fieldwork Investigation Project

The initial aim of our group’s investigation was to find out whether the grove should become pedestrianised or not. We broke our investigation down to working out how congested The Grove is in terms of traffic and parking space and the same with Brook St, west of The Grove. We also investigated just how many pedestrians were using and on The Grove. We chose this to investigate because we thought that there was a big conflict between pedestrians and drivers on that particular road.
Ilkley is situated in lower wharfedale at the southern edge of the Yorkshire dales. Although within easy reach of the cities Leeds and Bradford in nearby Bronte Country, Ilkley is surrounded by fine unspoiled scenery, with Ilkley Moor and the famous cow and calf rocks positioned just above the town. Although that leisured age has passed, Ilkley retains much of it original character and is still an attractive holiday resort as well as a commuter town. In prehistory, ancient Britons lived above the floods and swamps of the river on the high ground which is now Ilkley moor and much evidence, such as cup and ring stones and the famous swastika Stone, still survives. The Romans came to the town in 87AD and built a fort on a knoll 40 feet above the river near where the parish church and the Manor House Museum are now. Attractions in Ilkley include the Victorian bath house in the town itself, and recently refurbished Ilkley Pool and Lido; one of the countries last remaining outdoor public swimming pools. Regular events in the town include the Ilkley literature festival and the Ilkley music festival. Just to the north of Ilkley lie Bolton Abbey in the Duke of Devonshire’s extensive country estate, and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park.
