One’s past cannot be told from the views of others, one must tell it from their own views on how it really played out. One takes their life experiences and arising problems and put them into their own context even though they may be biased it is still their story. In the case of Robert Davies book, Fifth Business, main character Dustan Ramsay shares his life stories that he had experienced when he was younger with us. During his explanation he is successful in sharing what has happened to him in a clear concise manner.
When one first’s opens the book to part 1 chapter two, we can see that Percy Staunton is the first character that comes to life in front of our faces through Dustan’s stories. It is shown that both these characters have their differences as Percy comes from a family with a lot of money, and rich people are normally known for having their own ways with what happens, whereas Dustan comes from a poor background where they do not value material things but in a more spiritual aspect. “His parents were rich his clothes were fine… whereas mine were knitted by my mother” (Davies,3 ) This has caused many tension moments between the family that one can see through the stories. Coming from different backgrounds can influence a relationship especially between children. The negative influence of different backgrounds is very apparent in the relationship with Percy as he described him as an enemy and a lifelong friend. Percy and Dustan seem to get along just fine from the stories that have been told, along with a little competition from time to time just as any other young boy would do. The relationship between these two characters was realistic and almost life like in Dunny’s description.
Next one is introduced to the mother of Dunstan who describes his mother as almost the perfect mom with all the great qualities such as; funny, loving, caring and good sense of humor. Asides from all these great qualities, she is described as to have a very temperamental...
