Cover Page Film and Its Audience Introduction A Short History Film and Its Audience The very life breath of film lies in the fact it is principally a very interactive medium, not in the literal sense of the word, but in the way the philosophies that inform film and society are connected to each other like two halves of a circle and the way they affect each other in a complex manner. Film, essentially, acts as a mirror for society but to call it just that would be severely myopic. Film is a multi-faceted medium that has been used in a huge variety of ways by many different people. The interaction between film and its audience is an in constant flux. It keeps morphing according to many factors like the story, the treatment of the story, the technical details and even the cast of the film. There are many aspects to this interaction and relation between the film and the audience. Let us look at the chief ones among them. Early cinema: Early cinema came into being for a set of very simple reasons. People wanted to record their actions and store for a long time and also wanted to see themselves doing those actions. This need to store a record of their actions is also closely related to the desire for immortality. Accordingly, the first films by the Lumiere brothers were simple static-camera recordings of everyday commonplace events like a train arriving in a station and workers leaving through a factory gate. So in the early stage film was used only as a novelty that could actually record living images. Development of language: During and immediately after the First World War, the language of cinema was developed. This visual language is based upon a few basic principles and few of them are spatial unity, temporal continuity, inferred motion etc. Once this visual language was established, films became a common-man’s medium, easily understandable and easy to encode and decode....
