Find a Man to Love Isn’t Terrible

Jane Austen’s 1811 novel Sense and Sensibility (Penguin Books Ltd 1997) tells the romantic story of the Dashwood sister’s, Elinor (sense) and Marianne (sensibility). When their father dies all his properties go to his son John, and he tells his son that you will promise me that will help your step-mother and your sisters. However, he breaks his promise because of his greedy wife .Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters decide to move to a small house. Even though their situation is hard, they still stand up and face all the problems that they have. Marianne and Elinor find a suitor to be their husband to provide their needs for living. Finally, they find men who truly love them and they get married and live happily ever after. A major theme of the novel is how to find a good man to love. The movie of Jane Austin’s popular novel Sense and Sensibility was made in 1995, directed by Ang Lee, produced by Lindsay Doran and adopted for screen by Emma Thompson. In this paper I will discuss one main character Marianne, the sensibility girl and I will compare and contrast the novel and the film in which one element has been adapted by filmmakers.
The most important character element that appears in the novel and the movie version is regarding to the Marianne personality. The novel and film are very similar but also very different even though it has been adopted faithfully. In the novel, Marianne is a young, romantic and attractive girl that is full of imagination and love. She believes that individuals should act on their own feelings and emotions. She is the one who shows her love to Willoughby. She loves him so much and she is very happy to see him every time. The time that she separates from her love she becomes sick.
