Tina’s Burritos Gray Tennis To me, there is nothing that reminds me more of home than two delicious Tina’s burritos covered with melted Monterey Jack cheese and dripping with salsa. It may not seem a likely candidate for culinary nostalgia, but it is part of what makes a home to me. I simply can not imagine living anywhere and not having the steady reassurance of two steaming burritos straight from the microwave to ease an aching stomach. It is no discredit to my mom’s cooking that a frozen food is what reminds me most of home. I still think that my mom’s cooking is the best in the world having found no substitute to date. The only problem is that my mom does not have any steadfast dish that stands out to me as a staple throughout my life. She combines leftovers into delectable conglomerations creating a meal whose taste is greater than the sum of its parts, but still the lack of consistency leads me to burritos as the food that reminds me of home. I do not know when I started to eat burritos, but I know it was at a young age. Whenever my mom didn’t feel like making a big dinner or if dad was in charge for dinner it would always be a quick microwaved beef and bean burrito. It was love at first taste. I started slow, preferring to eat one burrito sans cheese and salsa, but I was satisfied. The big brothers and dad would eat two burritos complete with cheese and salsa. I had begun the time-honored Tennis tradition of eating burritos, perhaps for lunch before a big Eagles game (probably a loss because this was in the pre Mcnabb-Reid, Koy Detmer is our starting quarterback era.) Upon discovering that I was not allergic to dairy, something my parents thought I was till I was 8, I tried out melting cheese on my burritos, and a new world of taste was opened up to me. Later as I got older and taller my growing body called for more fuel and I moved finally up to eating two burritos and sometimes even three.
