Four Functions of Management

For any organization to functional effectively, the organization must establish goals and objectives. The organization must answer four basic questions: What is the purpose of the institution? The answer to that question at Xcel Energy is as an electric utility company, they provide electricity to customers in a safe and economical fashion. The second question is where do we want the company to go? In addition to selling electricity that has a minimal effect on the environment; Xcel is also establishing answers to long-term environmental questions by developing alternative forms of sustainable and renewable energy. The third question is how does the organization get there? The organization must first determine the economical and technological challenges, and conclude if it is feasible to continue. The fourth and final question is how we get there. What plan must management insert to accomplish this and achieve the desired results? The four functions of management will help the organization plan and reach those goals.
The first function and organization must complete is to Plan. The plan is the foundation of everything that follows will rest on. The quality of the plan will determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization and which strategies the organization should implement. “Planning is the management function that involves setting goals and deciding how to best achieve them. Setting goals and developing plans helps the organization to move in a focused direction while operating in an efficient and effective manner” (Plenert & Thomas 2006, p1).
Planning at my company is vital to our success. Because the organization exists in a regulated industry, major or substantial organizational changes cannot be implemented quickly.
