Gender Stereotypes in the Media

Tina Fey is known for breaking the stereotypes in the world of comedy. But one stereotype she isn’t breaking is the women she portrays in her movies and television show. Tina is a very successful actress, writer and comedian. She’s married and lives a life many people, both men and women, would envy. In her personal life she breaks boundaries for women, on many levels. But she does just the opposite through her on screen characters. Tina’s three most recent roles in Baby Mama, 30 Rock and Mean Girls, in which she writes for all three, she portrays a strong professional women but has troubles with her social and love life. With this, she is showing that a woman can’t be both strong in her professional life and her personal life. It’s been emphasized in our society that woman aren’t able to handle the balance of success in all aspects of life and they should focus on just one. But in Tina’s life, she proves this stereotype.

These two advertisements depict women to be less than human. For many years, woman have been depicted as someone who is meant to cook, clean and take care of the husband, do whatever it is he needs. In the first picture, the woman is just a carpet to the man, just something he can walk all over with no cares. In the second picture, the woman is caged, as if she is limited to what she can do and can’t step out of those bounds, which obviously isn’t much. Society has always stereotyped women to be less than human or even robotic. With advertisements like these, that stereotype will never go away.

With the Dove pro-age beauty campaign, they give out the idea that beauty can come at any age. Throughout time, the media has tied beauty with youthfulness.
