Gene One is a biotech company that creates a gene altering technology that eliminates the need for pesticides keeping farmers’ overhead low and organic food lovers happy. In fact, the overarching vision of Gene One is to, above all, make a contribution to society. The organizational strategy outlined in this paper will show how the leadership of Gene One had to change and grow to realize their vision. First, I will offer a brief history of Gene One that describes the function of the organization and the leadership of the company. Next, I will paint a picture of the decisions being considered for future growth. Finally, I will propose action steps that should be put in place that matches their leadership structure with a fully developed organizational vision.
Gene One has had a quick ride to the top of their industry. In only eight years, this family business went from a two million dollar biotech start-up to a 400 million a year organization. The founder and Chief Executive Officer, Don Ruiz, used initial investment dollars to recruit four friends and relatives to help him create the company of his dreams: Gene One. Don is a very people oriented leader and it shows in the make-up of his executive team. His close friend, Michelle Houghton, is a very dedicated Chief Financial Officer who has a strong sense of ownership in Gene One. She is very talented at securing dollars from private investors and has a positive reputation with Gene One’s board of directors and the Federal Department of Agriculture.
Another founding member of the leadership team is Teri Robertson, Chief Technology Officer. She is also Don’s niece. Teri has been instrumental in the success of Gene One as she single handedly developed the genetic breakthrough technology that has led to their success.
