Great Depression Journal Entry

August 6, 1932
Dear Diary,
The Great Depression affected me and my family a lot!!!! It started when the Stock Market crashed on October 29, 1929. It’s been three years since the Stock Market crashed. I have been having horrible times. After standing on the loaf line (the line where you get bread) for about two hours and forty five minutes today we got a good piece of bread. Every day the line seems to get longer, and every day it seems like those hours don’t want to tick. Every now and then depending on how lucky we are we get some soup. The soup tastes so good, it smells like rotten eggs, and it taste like burnt dust. The soup is my favorite and it doesn’t have mud in it.
Today I also walked over to my old house and saw the laughter that went on inside. I felt like they were having a better life then I was. My feet trembled and my sugar went down I needed my old place back. My children walked by with me and told me “Mommy, why are we so poor and have no house like that with the laughter?” I looked at them and had no clue what to tell them… because the bank stole our money? Or was it because rich people bought our houses?
“Someday hopefully we will be like the people inside.” I decided to tell them after a long period of silence. I hope things change, to have a new better world. This is no way to live life. I’m supposed to live life and not complain but now is the time to complain, because I have life to complain about.
