The character I have chosen to do my final project on is a drifter by the name of John Coffey. Coffey was a black man who was not a very intelligent man; some might say he was retarded. Some might say he was just uneducated. It was proven, when it was too late that he was indeed in the wrong place at the wrong time. Due to his appearance, he was wrongly accused of killing two little girls in a gruesome manner.
He also held some special powers that no one was aware of. This was the power of giving life. Even though the truth came out about what happened to the little girls Coffey was being accused of killing. He still chose to be put to death. He seemed to be a very spiritual man. However, he wanted out of the world that was so full of pain. That seemed to be all he knew instead of healing people. A microcosm of faith, Coffey was a messenger of hope and lost hope (it is not lost on most film critics that Coffey's initials have a heavenly symbolism). (James Allen, 1999)
He appeared to be a drifter, so he did not hold many jobs. He never stayed in one place very long. Mainly I believe because people did not think that he was capable of working. I think that with him being an older man and being slightly mentally challenged that he should not have any problem getting any type of assistance though a human service facility. There are many types of assistance available.
If I was working in a human service facility and I had the chance to work with Coffey as a client. I would first offer him information that could locate him a place to live for low income people. He would not have had to worry about going from one place to another. After he was settled into his home, I would make him aware of the training and education services that were available through the office, for instance, the Adult Basic Education classes (ABE) (WV Department of Health and Human Resources) as well as rehabilitation classes.
