Griffith Observatory's major exhibit areas focus on unique aspects of observation. The observatory ha several main areas of the Griffith Park Observatory; for example, The Hall of the Sky. The Hall of the Sky the personal connection to the primary objects in the sky: the Moon and the Sun. After the first half of our Astronomy class, I was able to visit the Observatory and comprehend what I am seeing. For example, in the West Alcoves, there were models of Day and Night, the Seasons, Moon Phases, and Eclipse. The models were very well designed and descriptive. They reminded me of the interactive movies on the mastering astronomy website.
There were also large public solar telescopes at the end of the hall that I was able to look at. Other areas in the Hall of the Sky include The Active Sun, Our Sun Is a Star, Elements, and Supernova. One other area I found very interesting and radiant area was the new Robert J. and Suzanne Gottlieb Transit Corridor. This is a 150ft long, 10ft wide glass walled passageway showing motions of the Sun, Moon, and Stars across the sky, and how the motions are liked with the calendar and time. This relates because the passage of time and season cycles is fundamental knowledge. The Sun’s transits across the north-south meridian and its elevation along the north-south arc have been observed by people all over the world.
One of the main new attractions to the Griffith Park Observatory is the Richard and Lois Gunther Depths of Space exhibit gallery. It is filled with exhibits illustrating the planets, earth our solar system, other worlds, stars, milky way galaxy, ionic universe, a familiar star pattern, and of course the Big Picture. The large new Richard and Lois Gunther Depths of Space exhibit gallery is activated by the recent transformation of cosmic perspective that began when people first ventured into space. No longer is observation and understanding of the sky bonded to the ground and framed by the horizon. The Gunther Depths of...
