Effect Of Money On Society Judy Du Sheima Berenji Jasvir Kaur Yuzi Qin Norms are widely shared and understood by society through social rules that tell people about appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. There are two types of norms, formal and informal. Formal norms are the written rules, which people have to follow or otherwise the law will punish them. The other one is informal norms, which means that they have to suffer the consequences by society, but there is not any punishment by law for those norms. Norms are important in the society because they explain to society that there are behaviors that they can and cannot do. If they are going to behave a certain way, which is not approved by society, then they will be punished by law or in society by other means. These norms help people to keep the society stable and function properly by them knowing what is going to happen and what they should accept others to do. The experiment that we decided to do as a group is about seeing the people's reaction when we use coins especially more pennies with some nickels and dimes as change. We want to observe how the cashier and other customers are going to look at people, also how they will think about people who is using coins to buy products, and how their attitude going to change when they realize a person is using coins. We had two different hypotheses about the out come of our experiment. First we thought that money is money, so it does not matter if it is in bills form, or in coins. Therefore it shouldn’t affect the cashier and other customers. The other hypotheses that we thought was that people are going to look at us as low class people, and make certain comments about how we are paying in coins. Also we want to analyze how racial and gender effect the way they will react. The group with Jasvir (Asian Indian) and Sheima (African/American) were meet with more of a racial inequality as they were told, “You are really broke huh! Giving me all your junk.”...
