Race in my community
Growing up as the only child I was really immersed in a cultural diversity. My community existed of all African Americans the only minority that was present was at the local curb stores in they only associated with customers on a business relations. As I got older and made my own pathway in life I realize that there were many people of different race, culture, religion, language, and ethnicity. This was an overwhelming experience for me I know everybody was different in some aspect of race and language, but not culture. I was so use to being around people like me.
In my community of Laurel, Ms there are several minority ethnic groups and we all get along very well. However, the primary ethnic group in my community is mainly African and Caucasian Americans with a few Mexicans. I have lived in my community for over seven years, and have not seen or heard any issues of racism in the community. This community has many issues but, racism is not one, there are problems with drugs and violence in the neighborhood.
Although, the state of Mississippi was one of the primary states associated with racism in the earlier years. Now in today's society there is less evidence of racial problems and more evidence of drugs and violence apparent in the community.
My community Laurel, Ms has a population of 18,405 according to the 2007 Census Bureau (). Racially, Laurel is comprised mostly of individuals who classified themselves as African American and white. Overall, the city has an average amount of racial diversity with most of the population comprising of a few races. (). Laurel has many public events in which there are many different ethnic groups attended and there has never been in racial problems at least not in the seven years I have lived in Laurel, Ms. However, there have been a few incidents in the workplace and schools were racism is presented whereas employees and employers have a racial conflict because of the color of his or her skin.
