Media does not flatten out Individual Culture Identity
“Childhood in the Age of Global Media” written by David Buckingham is about the effects that the media has on children’s culture. According to Buckingham, many people believe that the media is flattening out and erasing children's culture. He goes on to say that some people believe that “glocalisation” is making children lose their sense of selves and are making children act like each other. “Glocalisation” is the idea of globalization becoming local. Personal perspective is that today’s media is not flattening out the individual’s cultural identity. In addition today’s media can enhance children’s individual cultural identity, helping them learns, and gain capabilities older generations didn’t. It is a good thing that people all over the world can share a common understanding simply through things like a famous movie, book, and or products from all over the world.
Most people of today’s world feel that this generation being raised is the “technology age” several see it as the “TV times”, from the way children of today watch television on the daily normally. “Kids under the age of 6 watch an average of 2 hours of screen media daily, kids from age 8 to 18 years old spend nearly 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen and an additional 2 hours in front of a computer or video games (kids health).” Statics may seem alarming on how much time the kids are spending on today’s media. What are our children doing with all this time is the question though? “People feel the media are seen to have disrupted the process of socialization, upsetting the smooth transition of values from one generation to the next (Buckingham).” If this is the case, why buy our kids products that promote the lack of socialization? Oh yeah, because the products of today are making socialization even easier for kids today. The apple products such as the new iPad and iPhones make being able to connect with a family or friend across the world...
